“Doctor Who”‘s Karen Gillan is female villain lead in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY!

Doctor Who fans are about to get a Marvel crossover. No, the good Doctor isn’t stepping in for a role, but his companion is. Karen Gillan has recently been cast in James Gunn’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY in an unnamed role as the film’s lead female villain. She’ll join Lee Pace and Michael Rooker on the evil side of the line, while Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, and David Bautista will be the film’s heroic leads. The odd assortment of actors also includes the recently-added Glenn Close and John C. Reilly, though when the lead characters feature a walking tree and a talking raccoon, “odd” becomes a relative term. Production on GUARDIANS will begin in the next few months in London and the film opens on August 1, 2014.

MAN OF STEEL: Snyder hints toward sequel and JUSTICE LEAGUE!

While Marvel has been hitting homeruns with critics and fans, DC and Warner Bros. have been struggling to bring their superheroes to life, unless his name is Batman. However, on June 14th, that’s all going to change, as the studios are releasing director Zack Snyder’s MAN OF STEEL and I’m pretty sure it’s going to be the start of a new billion-dollar franchise.

In addition to making Superman cool again, the studios have other plans that require his help: their JUSTICE LEAGUE movie. While rumors have the movie being released in 2015, as of now, no director is officially attached, and no one is sure if the movie would work without introducing the other characters in their own movies first (like Marvel did before THE AVENGERS). So when Collider sat with Snyder a few hours ago at the Los Angeles MAN OF STEEL junket, they asked his thoughts the JUSTICE LEAGUE movie and if that would get his attention before a MAN OF STEEL sequel:

“I feel like you need to get Superman a little further down the road before you can do a Justice League movie.”

He also offered some tidbits about some hints about the MAN OF STEEL sequel and the shared DC Cinematic Universe:
When Omelete spoke to Zack Snyder today, he revealed an awesome Easter Egg. Snyder told them:

“The Wayne Enterprises logo is on a satellite that Zod destroys.”

Once Snyder revealed a Wayne logo is in Man of Steel, they asked him if he would like to pair Batman and Superman in Man of Steel 2. He said:

“I don’t know. Everything is interesting at this point. And don’t forget that Lex is out there, doing who knows what…”

How awesome is it that Snyder found a way to get the Wayne logo in the movie! This is definitely the next step in setting up a Justice League movie.

BIRDMAN costume revealed on set, following Michael Keaton!

Sometimes the best art imitates life. In BIRDMAN, Michael Keaton fittingly plays a washed-up actor who once played as the iconic BIRDMAN on film. Sound familiar? Anyway, the fictional “BIRDMAN” franchise gets revitalized by a stage production and the young actor looks to the former actor for inspiration. Apparently this involves dressing in full costume and following Micheal Keaton around the streets of New York.

Check back soon for more news regarding BIRDMAN, including the release date!

BLADE RUNNER sequel gets script polish via Michael Green!

News on director Ridley Scott’s planned BLADE RUNNER sequel has been quiet for a while, with the screenwriter for the original film, Hampton Fancher, being hired to pen the follow-up. Now, according to The Wrap, a new scribe has been hired. Michael Green, who recently co-wrote Warner Bros.’ DC adaptation GREEN LANTERN and WB shows “Smallville” and “Everwood”, will rewrite the BLADE RUNNER sequel for WB, Alcon Entertainment.

A source tells the site that the film is definitely a sequel (rather than a prequel, which was previously rumored), and it takes place “some years” after the ending of the 1982 sci-fi classic. Additionally, Scott is courting Harrison Ford to reprise his role as Rick Deckard from the first movie. Some of Green’s currently unproduced credits include WB’s GODS AND KINGS, Fox’s ROBOPOCALPYSE, and co-writing an adaptation of DC’s THE FLASH. No production start date for the BLADE RUNNER sequel has been confirmed yet.

Sam Mendes (SKYFALL) in talks for BOND 24 and BOND 25!

Geez, it’s been quite the topsy turvy week for the Bond franchise. Mere hours after names like Nicolas Winding Refn, Ang Lee, Tom Hooper, David Yates and Shane Black were tossed around as considerations for the director’s chair of BOND 24, Sam Mendes went ahead and re-upped for the job himself. It was a surprising turn of the events, especially given that the SKYFALL helmer said back in the spring that the prospect of directing another Bond movie made him “physically ill.” Well, it looks like he’s found a cure.

And even more, Showbiz 411 is now reporting that Mendes will “most likely [direct] BOND 25.” This will undoubtedly re-spark the rumors that floated last year that the next two installments (and the final two Daniel Craig films) of the series would be of a two-part story, something that was later scuttled. But with what must have been intense (and expensive) negotiations to get the guy who made SKYFALL, the first billion dollar Bond, and with fee agreements still being drawn up for Daniel Craig to return, perhaps producers are looking to make the most of the talent they have while they still have them.

EXPENDABLES 3 confirms Chan, Cage, Snipes, Rourke, adds Jovovich!

It seems like the goal of THE EXPENDABLES movies is to put together a dream-team action cast, and then figure out the plot. Audiences have been pleased with the line-ups of the past films, and producer/star Sylvester Stallone is hoping to keep fans happy. I’ve previously reported that Jackie Chan, Wesley Snipes, and Nicolas Cage were all circling THE EXPENDABLES 3, and now it looks like Stallone has got them. Mickey Rourke has also confirmed his return to the franchise. According to Deadline, the three actors are in “advanced negotiations” to join the film, and Milla Jovovich is also in talks to fight in the boys’ club. Jovovich could be a fun addition to the mix, and the series has definitely run short on female firepower. Audiences love her in the RESIDENT EVIL franchise, and I don’t think they’ll have any problem seeing her kicking butt alongside Stallone, Statham, et al.

Box Office: FAST 6 to stay ahead of AFTER EARTH, NOW YOU SEE ME

FAST & FURIOUS 6 dominated last week over some serious competition from THE HANGOVER: PART III and EPIC, but it looks like the turnout for the last weekend of May will be less than a speedbump to the muscule car/muscule man franchise. This weekend it faces Will and Jaden Smith in AFTER EARTH, which has gotten terrible reviews and tepid audience response (even from Will Smith fans). Also magician-heist film NOW YOU SEE ME opens tonight and despite a charismatic cast and a mind-bending premise has not gained the attention necessary for success.

Here are the predictions from Laremy @ Box Office Oracle:

1- Fast and Furious 6 – $40.9 million
2- After Earth – $28.4 million
3- Now You See Me – $21.3 million
4- Epic – $20.1 million
5- The Hangover: Part III – $18.3 million
6- Star Trek Into Darkness – $18.2 million
7- Iron Man 3 – $9.5 million
8- The Great Gatsby – $6.9 million

Check back on Sunday for the final figures!
