Awesome old-school “Toho” style PACIFIC RIM trailer!

For those fans of the original GODZILLA films and the genre they inspired comes a fan-made trailer for PACIFIC RIM cut in the style of those Toho Studio classics. PACIFIC RIM was a great love letter to the kaiju films of old, and if you haven’t seen it already I would seriously recommend the IMAX 3D version.

Not only is this trailer an excellent edit, but it also makes me want to see Gareth Edward’s GODZILLA reboot that much more. Big Green returns to screen on May 16, 2014!

Trailer for LONE SURVIVOR, starring Wahlberg, Kitsch, Bana & Hirsch!

Universal Pictures have released the first trailer, poster, and images for Peter Berg‘s adaptation of the non-fiction book LONE SURVIVOR. The film tells the story of four Navy SEALs on an ill-fated covert mission who try to neutralize a high-level Taliban operative, but are ambushed by enemy forces in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan. Berg is a wildly uneven director, but I have so much good will towards him for THE RUNDOWN and THE KINGDOM that I want him to succeed.

Unfortunately, this trailer makes the film look like a military recruitment ad of the worst kind. The best way to respect the troops is to paint them honestly, and I fear that honesty is absent from Berg’s picture. I hope this trailer is misleading and Berg hasn’t simple made ACT OF VALOR with real actors. The film stars Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Ben Foster, Emile Hirsch, and Eric Bana.

LONE SURVIVOR will open for an awards-qualifying limited release on December 27, 2013 before going wide on January 10, 2014

AVATAR 2 gets Josh Friedman for a script polish!

Slowly but surely, development on the AVATAR sequels continues to progress. While James Cameron‘s past filmography tells us that the filmmaker will take as long as he pleases in between projects, we’ve seen numerous deadlines come and go for when AVATAR 2 and AVATAR 3 are expected to begin filming and finally hit theaters. The most recent timeline has Zoe Saldana saying that she thinks production will finally begin in early 2014, and while Cameron has been hard at work on the screenplays for the past few years, it appears that he’s enlisting a little help to get the script for AVATAR 2 in tip-top shape before production (hopefully) gets underway.

The folks over at The Wrap report that “Terminator: The Sarah Chronicles” creator Josh Friedman has been recruited to work on the screenplay for AVATAR 2. This is presumably not a “page-one rewrite” job, as Cameron has been crafting the scripts for both sequels himself over the past four years. That being said, it appears as though Cameron would like a fresh voice to do some work the script before production begins, and Friedman is his man. It’s unclear if Friedman will also be working on the AVATAR 3 script, since the plan is to film both sequels back-to-back. The scribe has a history with 20th Century Fox, having created the Terminator TV series. He also wrote the screenplay for Brian De Palma‘s THE BLACK DAHLIA and worked on the script for Steven Spielberg’s WAR OF THE WORLDS.

Whether filming on the AVATAR sequels actually begins early next year or not is anyone’s guess, but Cameron hasn’t just been sitting around twiddling his thumbs in the time since AVATAR’s release. The filmmaker has been advancing new technology to use on the production, and producer Jon Landau recently revealed that they will be utilizing underwater performance-capture on AVATAR 2. While the proposed 2015 release date for AVATAR 2 is looking less and less likely, the hiring of a new writer for the film signals that progress is indeed happening—just at a James Cameron-friendly pace.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII to begin production next month!

According to Jedi News, Disney have signed a filming location deal with Pinewood Studios which will give them studio space there for the next ten years. We already know that GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, CINDERELLAand STAR WARS: EPISODE VII will all shoot at the iconic location, and the studio clearly has plans to return for possible sequels to them and more besides. However, most interesting is the fact that J.J. Abrams STAR WARS movie is currently in pre-production under the pseudonym, “Foodles Productions Ltd”. This was registered by Disney UK back in March.

The site adds, “that the film has been in pre-production at Pinewood Studios for three and a half months in advance of an August 2013 shooting date. We hear they have block booked the studios for 10 years and that construction of offices and facilities on-site is underway. Also storage space is being located in the local area.” With Kathleen Kennedy recently promising a return to old school practical effects, it could be these that they are currently working on. It’s possible that this early start date will allow Abrams to produce STAR TREK 3 by 2016. We should expect casting news soon.

Trailer for Ben Stiller’s THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY!

20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for Ben Stiller‘s next directorial effort, THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY. In the remake of the 1947 film, Stiller stars as the eponymous LIFE Magazine proofreader who, incapable of standing up for himself in the real world, retreats to a fantasy where he becomes his poised, confident opposite. This trailer for WALTER MITTY is brilliantly refreshing, as it attempts to capture the mood and tone of the film with a simple (and haunting) “Of Monsters and Men” song and minimal dialogue.

It really looks like Stiller has crafted something special here, and this is exactly the kind of film I’m eager to see following a summer filled with studio blockbusters. I also wouldn’t be surprised if THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY turned out to be a major awards contender later this year. The film also stars Kristen Wiig, Sean Penn, Adam Scott, Patton Oswalt, and Shirley MacLaine.

David O. Russell’s AMERICAN HUSTLE gets first trailer!

Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for David O. Russell‘s AMERICAN HUSTLE. The story is based on an undercover sting operation called “Abscam”, which was set up in the 1980s by a con artist working for the FBI who rooted out corruption in Congress. Christian Bale plays the con artist, Amy Adams plays his lover/accomplice, Bradley Cooper plays an FBI agent, and Jennifer Lawrence is set as Bale’s “loose cannon of a Long Island house wife.”

Those plot and character details are mostly absent from the trailer, but we do get a look at what could be a wild and fun ride. David O. Russell most recently directed SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK, to much Oscar applause. The film stars Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Christian Bale, Jeremy Renner, Louis C.K., Michael Pena, and Jack Jones.

AMERICAN HUSTLE opens in limited release on December 13th before going wide on December 25th.
