KINGSMAN sequel titled KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE, story details revealed!

It’s been over a year since we followed Taron Egerton‘s Eggsy on his journey to be a highly skilled spy in KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE, but word since that film’s impressive box office take has been centered on an inevitable sequel to the perverse action bonanza. Matthew Vaughn, the man behind X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, directed the first film and is already set to direct the second one. And as CBM points out, in a new interview with Empire Magazine, the writer-director gave up a small treasure trove of information about what to expect when Eggsy and Mark Strong‘s Merlin return in 2017.

First of all, we now have a title for the upcoming film: KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE is the official title according to Vaughn, who didnt feel the need to expand on what exactly this GOLDEN CIRCLE is. The story on the new KINGSMAN movie in Empire also includes a good look at some concept art for the sequel, one of which is a first look at the Kingsman cab that can dive deep underwater like a submarine. More importantly, one of the pieces of art shows a bombed-out Kingsman headquarters, suggesting that, much like SKYFALL, the new film will begins with the destruction of the home base of Eggsy and Merlin. It’s likely this that will send our heroes running for their American counterparts, The Statesman, run by Halle Berry‘s character.

Most intriguing of all, from what we’ve gleaned from the story thus far, is what Vaughn himself had to say about the making of the film and what to expect from the film, not the least of which being “a massive f******* frankfurter.” Alright then. Here’s what Vaughn had to say:

“I didn’t know if I wanted to direct this or not. I was worried about the villain. Spy films are only as good as their villains. Then one morning I woke up with the whole storyline in place, and a new villain plot.”

“You try not to read what people want, but they do want another church sequence. I have no reason for another massacre to happen. But I have other sequences you’ve never seen before.”

It’s heartening to hear that Vaughn isn’t looking to simply xerox the structure and story of the first film. A widening of the universe via The Statesman and Moore’s character could open up new avenues for Vaughn and his creative team, and make KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE one of those rare sequels that takes the success of the original as a way to get more daring in narrative and design.

KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE is currently slated for release on June 10th, 2017.

Box Office: BATMAN V SUPERMAN opens to $170M domestic, $424 worldwide!

Decimating the concept that negative reviews have an adverse affect on box office receipts, BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE took this weekend with an absolutely massive $424.1 million worldwide. Domestically, the film took some $170.1 million, which combined with $254 million in international markets to get to the humongous global figure.

In the wake of these figures, Zack Snyder‘s epic adaptation of the DC properties, and opening salvo for his JUSTICE LEAGUE movies, has broken a number of records, both domestically and internationally. Stateside, this marked the biggest opening for Warner Bros. to date, narrowly beating out HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 2. It also marks the biggest domestic opening of 2016 (previously held by DEADPOOL) and of any Easter weekend beforehand (previously held by FURIOUS 7), while this also marks the largest debut for both DC and Snyder.

The superhero showdown also had the biggest March opening of all time, beating out THE HUNGER GAMES, and ended up being Warner Bros.’s biggest opening thus far in China. The film opened in 66 markets internationally, and was seen on well over 44,000 screens, which is simply unprecedented in the history of American films overseas.

Of course, it wasn’t the only film that made money this weekend, just the clear winner. After three weeks of excellent business, ZOOTOPIA dipped to second place with a still impressive $23.1 million domestically, while MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 2 ended up taking the third spot with a relatively estimable $18.1 million. Elsewhere, ALLEGIANT continued its meager earning streak with an estimated $9.5 million, and the faith-centric MIRACLES FROM HEAVEN also reached an equal weekend total of $9.5 million.

Here’s a breakdown of the estimated domestic numbers for the weekend grosses, with total grosses for each film as well, via Box Office Mojo:

1. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice $170.1M

2. Zootopia $23.13M

3. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 $18.12M

4. Miracles from Heaven $9.5M

5. The Divergent Series: Allegiant $9.M

New image from WONDER WOMAN reveals Amazon Warriors!

wonder-woman-movie-cast-gal-gadot-600x400

Moviegoers are already admitting that their main reason for seeing BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE has to do with the superhero not in the title, and now Warner Bros. is seizing that buzz by offering a new look at Wonder Woman’s upcoming standalone film, WONDER WOMAN. We’ve only seen the barest of glimpses at the World War I-set fantasy epic, along with a few set photos that gave us a look at the WWI garb and ragtag team of fighters that includes Chris Pine, but today’s new image highlights the fantasy aspect of the film, revealing Diana Prince’s Themysciran cohorts.

Indeed, the Amazon women of the Greek myth have lived on the hidden island of Themyscira for ages, and Wonder Woman aims to give the comics character her long-overdue standalone film that finally delves into the character’s origin story. Patty Jenkins, who directed the serial killer biopic MONSTER and came close to helming Marvel’s THOR: THE DARK WORLD, is at the helm of WONDER WOMAN, which recounts Gal Gadot’s transformation from a young princess to a full-fledged warrior.

This image unveils the trio of women who help raise young Diana, her mother Hippolyta played by GLADIATOR’s Connie Nielsen, and her military aunts General Antiope (Robin Wright) and Antiope’s lieutenant Menalippe (Force Majeure actress Lisa Loven Kongsli). Speaking with EW, Jenkins revealed that Diana is the only child on the island, and these three women have very different ways of raising her.

Hippolyta is protective and aims to keep Diana on Themyscira for as long as possible, while Wright’s Antiope feels she’s destined to be a warrior. When it came to crafting the fantastical costumes, however, Jenkins says she and costume designer Lindy Hemming wanted to approach the film differently:

“To me, they shouldn’t be dressed in armor like men,” Jenkins says of the women’s battle wear. “It should be different. It should be authentic and real—and appealing to women.”

Speaking more generally about the look and feel of the titular character, Jenkins was frank:

“I, as a woman, want Wonder Woman to be hot as hell, fight badass, and look great at the same time—the same way men want Superman to have huge pecs and an impractically big body. That makes them feel like the hero they want to be. And my hero, in my head, has really long legs.”

Based on this first-look image, I’d say she succeeded. This cast looks positively awesome, and early word out of BATMAN V SUPERMAN is that Gadot’s Wonder Woman is one of the best things about the movie. I am mighty excited to follow this character on her own adventures when the film opens in theaters on June 23, 2017. WONDER WOMAN also stars Danny Huston, David Thewlis, Ewen Bremner, Saïd Taghmaoui, Elena Anaya, and Lucy Davis.

The trailer for THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE swoops in, film due February 10, 2017!

Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE, the animated Caped Crusader’s spinoff feature from THE LEGO MOVIE. Will Arnett returns to voice the Gotham vigilante in the satirical spin on the classic comic book character for director Chris McKay (Robot Chicken). From a script by Seth Grahame-Smith, the film centers on the solitary Bat of Gotham whose world is turned upside down when Robin and Batgirl come on the scene.

This teaser trailer is fantastic, and couldn’t come at a better time. While Ben Affleck‘s Batman in BATMAN V SUPERMAN is a very dark incarnation of the Caped Crusader, THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE‘s take on the character looks to be equally different, diving deep into the monotonous day-to-day of what it’s really like to be Batman. McKay was the co-director on THE LEGO MOVIE, overseeing the animation from its base of operations in Australia, so he already has a solid handle on the tone that Phil Lord and Chris Miller established in that film, and I really can’t wait to spend 90 minutes with Arnett’s iteration of this superhero, and all the glorious banality that that entails.

The cast is filled out by Michael Cera as Batman’s sidekick Robin, Rosario Dawson as Batgirl/Barbara Gordon, and Zach Galifianakis as The Joker, Ralph Fiennes as Alfred Pennyworth and Mariah Carey as the Mayor of Gotham. THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE is set to arrive in theaters February 10, 2017.

THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE poster is revealed, trailer arriving tomorrow!

lego-batman-movie-logo-405x600

While it would be nice to get a sequel to THE LEGO MOVIE sooner rather than later, we at least won’t have to wait another year for a follow up to a movies set in the THE LEGO MOVIE universe. Next year, we’ll be getting THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE, and yesterday we got the first images with the first trailer hitting tomorrow (it will likely be attached to BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE). Today, we’ve got the official logo for the movie, and as you can see, it mostly works in black or maybe very, very, very dark grey.

We still don’t know too much about the plot, although yesterday we learned that part of the film will be in “the ho-hum day-to-day of being Batman and what it’s like to fight crime each day.” Director Chris McKay told USA Today, “Batman is an island onto himself, the only thing he doesn’t have is relationships. We’re making About a Boy as directed by (action director) Michael Mann.” Producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller also say that the film will address if Batman can ever be happy, and that the spin-off will acknowledge every era of Batman filmmaking.

THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE opens February 10, 2017, and also features the voices of Will Arnett as Batman/Bruce Wayne, Michael Cera as Robin, Zach Galifianakis as The Joker, Ralph Fiennes as Alfred, Rosario Dawson as Batgirl, and Mariah Carey as Gotham City’s mayor.

Box Office: ZOOTOPIA three-peats, ALLEGIANT disappoints in opener!

zootopia-slice-600x200

As predicted based on Friday’s box office, Disney’s animated hit ZOOTOPIA has claimed a top box office spot for the third straight weekend in a row. Having brought in an estimated $38+ million this weekend, and having recently crossed the $200 million domestic tally, ZOOTOPIA is closing in on $600 million worldwide thanks to strong international support. It’s also now the tenth best box office for films released in the last calendar year, moving ahead of Sony’s SPECTRE. And thanks to its critical success, the family friendly animated animal action-adventure should have legs for weeks to come, even with the mega blockbuster film BATMAN V SUPERMAN poised to knock it from its #1 perch next weekend.

Speaking of new releases, ZOOTOPIA managed to stay ahead of two debuts this weekend. The first is ALLEGIANT, the third and penultimate film from THE DIVERGENT SERIES, which took Friday’s top spot but couldn’t outlast ZOOTOPIA’s run. That’s a series low for the adaptations of Veronica Roth’s novels, which close out with ASCENDANT on June 9, 2017. The other debut, Patricia Riggen’s faith-based drama MIRACLES FROM HEAVEN, holds on to Friday’s third spot for an overall bronze medal for the weekend, totaling over $18 million since it’s Wednesday opening. In fact, the Top Five finished out the same way they ended on Friday, with 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE and DEADPOOL at four and five respectively.

The R-rated Fox film featuring Ryan Reynolds has smashed plenty of records over its run, but its total now moves it ahead of fellow superhero films GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY ($333.2 million) and SPIDER-MAN 3 ($336.5 million), taking the eighth spot on the list of top-grossing superhero flicks. SPIDER-MAN 2 is the next film in its sights at almost $374 million. DEADPOOL has also moved up to the number two spot on the superhero origins list, with only SPIDER-MAN’s $403.7 million total ahead of it.

Take a look at this snapshot of the weekend box office’s top ten:

1. Zootopia $38.04M
2. The Divergent Series: Allegiant $29.05M
3. Miracles from Heaven $15M
4. 10 Cloverfield Lane $12.5M
5. Deadpool $8M
6. London Has Fallen $6.89M
7. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot $2.8M
8. The Perfect Match $1.9M
9. The Brothers Grimsby $1.4M
10. The Revenant $1.22M

Simon Pegg in talks to join READY PLAYER ONE as Ogden Morrow!

worlds-end-simon-pegg-slice

Filmmaker Steven Spielberg has been a lifelong gamer, so the prospect of him directing the 80s-infused, gamer-centric sci-fi film READY PLAYER ONE made sense. But another lover of sci-fi is also joining the project, and he makes one hell of an addition. THR reports that Simon Pegg is in talks to join the ensemble of the Ernie Cline adaptation, which takes place in 2044 and revolves around a highly valuable online virtual reality space called OASIS, in which most inhabitants of Earth spend their free time.

And who is Pegg playing, you ask? If you’ve read the book, you’ll no doubt spark to this casting: Pegg will fill the role of Ogden Morrow, the co-creator of OASIS. The story of READY PLAYER ONE follows a teenager named Wade Watts, a gunter (a portmanteau of egg hunter) who is the first person to discover the first of three keys left behind by the late OASIS creator James Halliday. After Halliday’s death, a worldwide Easter Egg hunt ensues to find a hidden treasure that gives the discoverer control over OASIS—which, in this dystopian future, essentially means control over the world.

In Cline’s book, Morrow is very much the Steve Wozniak to James Halliday’s Steve Jobs, and I’m delighted to hear that Pegg will be taking on the part. MUD and X-MEN: APOCALYPSE star Tye Sheridan is set to play Wade, ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL standout Olivia Cooke is playing Art3mis, a virtual friend of Wade’s, and Ben Mendelsohn is set as the villainous Nolan Sorrento, head of a company that wants to find all the eggs so they can take control of OASIS.

This won’t be Pegg’s first time working with Spielberg. He and Nick Frost had supporting roles in the filmmaker’s first animated feature, THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN, so this is Pegg’s second time working with the iconic director. While I have mixed feelings about the book, I am beyond intrigued to see how Spielberg handles the material, and he’s put together one hell of a cast so far, so count me cautiously optimistic.

Expect to hear more casting announcements soon as Spielberg aims to start shooting in June. Warner Bros. will release READY PLAYER ONE in theaters on March 30, 2018.
