It’s been over a year since we followed Taron Egerton‘s Eggsy on his journey to be a highly skilled spy in KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE, but word since that film’s impressive box office take has been centered on an inevitable sequel to the perverse action bonanza. Matthew Vaughn, the man behind X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, directed the first film and is already set to direct the second one. And as CBM points out, in a new interview with Empire Magazine, the writer-director gave up a small treasure trove of information about what to expect when Eggsy and Mark Strong‘s Merlin return in 2017.
First of all, we now have a title for the upcoming film: KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE is the official title according to Vaughn, who didnt feel the need to expand on what exactly this GOLDEN CIRCLE is. The story on the new KINGSMAN movie in Empire also includes a good look at some concept art for the sequel, one of which is a first look at the Kingsman cab that can dive deep underwater like a submarine. More importantly, one of the pieces of art shows a bombed-out Kingsman headquarters, suggesting that, much like SKYFALL, the new film will begins with the destruction of the home base of Eggsy and Merlin. It’s likely this that will send our heroes running for their American counterparts, The Statesman, run by Halle Berry‘s character.
Most intriguing of all, from what we’ve gleaned from the story thus far, is what Vaughn himself had to say about the making of the film and what to expect from the film, not the least of which being “a massive f******* frankfurter.” Alright then. Here’s what Vaughn had to say:
“I didn’t know if I wanted to direct this or not. I was worried about the villain. Spy films are only as good as their villains. Then one morning I woke up with the whole storyline in place, and a new villain plot.”
“You try not to read what people want, but they do want another church sequence. I have no reason for another massacre to happen. But I have other sequences you’ve never seen before.”
It’s heartening to hear that Vaughn isn’t looking to simply xerox the structure and story of the first film. A widening of the universe via The Statesman and Moore’s character could open up new avenues for Vaughn and his creative team, and make KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE one of those rare sequels that takes the success of the original as a way to get more daring in narrative and design.
KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE is currently slated for release on June 10th, 2017.
