Vanity Fair covers STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI; new details and images emerge!

A deep dive into Rian Johnson‘s STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI was teased earlier this week in a cover story from Vanity Fair. Now, that early look has been released online in full and there is a lot to unpack here. For starters, they had the first looks at new characters in the STAR WARS universe played by Oscar-winner Benicio Del Toro and Oscar-nominee Laura Dern. But that’s just a taste of what’s to come in this spread, which also features beautifully shot images from Annie Leibovitz, capturing Johnson behind the scenes with stars Mark Hamill and the late Carrie Fisher.

Vanity Fair also has some epic shots of young stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver and the new Chewbacca (Newbacca?) Joonas Suotamo. There’s also quite a bit of plot info on the eighth installment of the Star Wars franchise, which you can find in the captions below each image. STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI arrives December 15, 2017:

Rey (Daisy Ridley) hones her lightsaber skills—and channels her inner Force on the watery planet of Ach-To.

The new Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo) joins Daisy Ridley in the Millenium Falcon’s cockpit.

Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamil) isn’t alone standing on that rock in the ocean but living among an “indigenous race of caretaker creatures.” These creatures, which director Rian Johnson assures are “not Ewoks,” live in “beehive-shaped huts” (pictured above), similar to what the ancient monks that actually lived on the location of Skellig hundreds of years ago would live.

Brother and sister are reunited as Luke and Leia (the late, great Carrie Fisher) meet again.

Laura Dern’s Vice Admiral Holdo has shades of Effie Trinket in this first look at her mysterious character, described as “a prominent officer in the Resistance.”

There are also some more details on the new character played by Benicio Del Toro, who actually won’t be named throughout THE LAST JEDI’s runtime. Described as “a ‘shady character’ of unclear allegiances,” Johnson reveals that internally they’ve referred to him as “DJ,” the reasoning for which fans will be able to pick up on.

First Order Leaders: The stern General Hux (Domhnall Gleeson) and an unmasked Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie) join Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), Han Solo’s son and slayer, as he wields his crossguard lightsaber.

Carrie Fisher, Oscar Isaac, John Boyega, and Kelly Marie Tran as the rebels General Leia Organa, Poe Dameron, Finn, and Rose Tico, with droid BB-8.

Another new place is the “glittering casino city” called Canto Bight, which will see Finn and newcomer Rose Tico finding themselves in as the story progresses. Director Rian Johnson calls it “a Star Wars Monte Carlo–type environment, a little James Bond–ish, a little To Catch a Thief. It was an interesting challenge, portraying luxury and wealth in this universe,” he revealed. “I was thinking, O.K., let’s go ultra-glamour. Let’s create a playground, basically, for rich *ssholes.” Neal Scanlan (seated) is creative supervisor of the STAR WARS creature shop.
