Disney has released a new look at SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY by way of an extended TV spot. The second-ever “Star Wars Story” after 2016’s ROGUE ONE chronicles the origin story of Han Solo, charting his beginnings as a smuggler and the relationships that paved the way for his colorful personality. HAIL CAESAR breakout Alden Ehrenreich fills the role of Han, and this new TV spot for once puts the focus on his titular character. Indeed, the past two trailers haven’t really shown too much of Ehrenreich’s take on Han Solo, but here we get a pretty heavy focus on the relationship between Han and Chewbacca.
SOLO is poised to reveal how Han and Chewbacca first met, and we get a tease of their initial banter in this TV spot. Joonas Suotamo has officially taken over the role of Chewbacca from Peter Mayhew, who returned for THE FORCE AWAKENS but whose health meant he had limited ability to play Chewbacca in THE LAST JEDI, which is where Suotamo filled the role.
Bradford Young’s cinematography continues to be a standout in these SOLO spots as the story and characters remain a bit less intriguing. It’ll be interesting to see if screenwriters Lawrence Kasdan and Jon Kasdan have crafted a compelling reason to explain Han Solo’s backstory, since that seems to be one of the main complaints lodged against SOLO in the first place—that we have no need to learn anything more about the iconic character.
Directed by Ron Howard, the film also stars Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Thandie Newton, and Paul Bettany. SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY opens in theaters on May 25th.
